The Economics and Management School (EMS) of Wuhan University (WHU) is the largest school under the administration of WHU, and one of the largest schools of its kind in China. It dates back to 1893 when 'Ziqiang (Self-Reliance) Institute' was founded with a division of business and the earliest business education institution in China. In 2024, EMS was ranked among the top 1% worldwide by ESI (Essential Science Indicators), with its economics and management disciplines among the top 150 universities worldwide, 133rd in the US News Economics & Business ranking, and its economics and econometrics ranked 83th in QS subject rankings. EMS' vision is to become a leading business school in China with world-class standing. As such, it has been striving for excellence and earned AMBA accreditation in 2011 as the 4th in China, EQUIS initial accreditation in 2016 (re-accredited in 2019 and 2022 respectively), and AACSB initial accreditation in 2022. Currently, EMS has 11 departments, 1 research institute, several academic research centers, The 30,000-square-metre office building provides modern conditions for the teaching and research. The experimental teaching center is equipped with more than 1200 sets of hardware equipment, 18 internationally used teaching software, more than 30 domestic experimental teaching software and more than 40 databases both in Chinese and English. In compliment to the University Library, the School library has a collection of 160,000 books and 40,000 periodicals in economics and management.

EMS covers four first-level disciplines: Theoretical Economics, Applied Economics, Management Science & Engineering, and Business Administration. EMS is the only few schools in China that have been authorized to offer degree programs in all first-level disciplines in economics and management. In 2025,EMS holds 253 full-time faculty members, including 90 Professors, 128 Associate professors, 35 Lecturers/Assistant Professor. 85% are under the age of 45 and have overseas experience.The faculty development in EMS is moving towards a reasonable distribution of age, an optimized structure by discipline, and a continuous improvement in overall quality.

EMS has over 2600 undergraduates, more than 3000 full-time postgraduates, and about 300 international students.
